Volunteering is literally the best way to stick it to the man. It's you saying, "yes, this is a deserving cause. So much so that I'm going to do it." If the government doesn't provide enough, we will. Meet the people you actually care about.
I have been volunteering with Alexandria Senior Services for several years. I pick up groceries for senior citizens, bring them to their homes, put them away, and at the same time talk with them and ask them about their lives. If I notice small things around the house, like the AC is on too low or the fire alarm needs new batteries, I will help them with those small items. If it's something I can't or shouldn't do, I report back to the Senior Services staff.
